In the 1960s, Carl Countryman started hand-building audio gear in San Francisco for bands like the Grateful Dead. Restless and inquisitive, he built novel new piano pickups, the first active DI box, the first Earset microphone, and whole categories of miniature microphones because he wanted to explore what was possible.
